This is one of the best books I have read. It takes place in Jackson, MS in the 60’s and portrays the actual state of the treatment of the black population, who are only allowed to be maids. It is about the life of mainly 2 maids and their treatment but also involves other families and their maids. One of the white characters decides to write a book a book about the situation, using different names and towns. It describes how she is treated by the other whites in town for her compassion for the blacks, even though they are unaware she is writing the book.
